Post football flames spark in Village

In the minutes after the Superbowl ended, students streamed out from the Village Apartments; some upset and some very happy after the New York Giants won.

But all was not well as some students got a little too excited as they set a fire to the dumpster in between Quads 3 and 4, causing a billow of smoke reach toward the sky.

“I am absolutely devastated that we had a dumpster fire,” Lee Peter, Vice President of Student Affairs, said. “It is extremely dangerous. However, I’m glad we didn’t have worse.”

The University of Hartford was lucky, unlike nearby neighbor, UMass, who had to use tear gas to break up riots and where 14 students were arrested after the Superbowl.

“The dumpster fire was the only significant event,” Joe Schmaltz, Director of Public Safety, said. “Video tapes are being reviewed and we do have some leads.”
