Men’s basketball wins first game over break

[caption id="attachment_3860458" align="alignright" width="460" caption="Adam Manison"][/caption] At the end of their 10-game winter break schedule, the 0-9 Hawks, before the break, gained their first victory of the season and two more to come out 3-15 at the start of spring semester. On Jan. 5 of the new year Head Coach John Gallagher got his first win of his second year at the helm of Hartford against New Hampshire 56-49, as a result in large part of senior guard Andres Torres with 27 points, 14 of which came from the charity stripe. The Hawks pulled off their second win of the season on Jan. 15 against Binghamton, 69-57. Despite being down one to start the second half, the Hawks went on a 24-10 run in the first 10 minutes and by the end of it Hartford’s bench had out-scored Binghamton 27-11. Four players for Hartford reached double digit figures in scoring. The Hawks continued to improve by winning a third and second home game against UMBC, 74-57, on Jan. 17. The Hawks shot over 50% from the field, made 11 three-pointers, 10 more than UMBC and went into half time with six point lead that they never gave up.  Hartford was led by senior point guard Andres Torres who had a double-double scoring 16 points and dishing out 10 assists. Prior these victories, Hartford lost the first four games of the break against the Niagara Purple Eagles 79-76 on Dec. 10, the Marist Red Foxes, 89-86 in a double overtime thriller on Dec. 21, La Salle on Dec. 31, 73-55,  and on Jan. 2 to Albany 88-63. Having gotten their first victory, against UNH, Hartford next lost to Vermont 72-59 at home on Jan. 8 but returned to winning before losing to Maine 63-49 on Jan. 19 and Boston University 65-46 on Jan. 22, dropping Hartford to 4-15 this season.
