Hot start in cold winter for indoor track

As the winter of 2012 continues to get colder, the Hartford track and field team looks to heat up.

The Hawks will return to the track after an extended break at the Reebok Indoor Games in Boston, Massachusetts on Jan 27.

Hartford’s indoor season started with a loss for both the women’s and men’s teams to Vermont in a dual meet on Dec. 3.

Hartford’s men lost 90-60 and the women went down 97-66.

Notable performances did come in the losses, however.

Senior sprinter Anderson Emerole won both the 300 meter dash and 400 meter dash.

Hurdler Cody Adamson broke his own school record in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 8.25 seconds.

For the women, freshman thrower Savannah Gordon appeared in hir first collegiate event and won the shot put with a throw of 37’1” and the weight throw with a distance of 48’4”.

The jumps were also successful as Alisha Beeman won the high jump and Alexandria Thatcher captured the long jump.

Following the meet, the Hawks headed to Boston to take part in the Harvard open on Dec. 10.

Emerole won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.33.

He finished ahead of the other 105 runners in the event. Adamson set another school record in the hurdles as he clocked an 8.86 60 meter hurdle time in the preliminary heat before finishing 11th overall in the finals.

Hartford secured two top 15 finishes in the 3,000 meter run.

Senior Andrew Chalmers came in at 4th overall with an 8:42.79 second finish and John Busque set his own personal record with a time of 9:02.01 as he crossed the line in 15th place.

The women picked up three wins at the meet.

Freshman Tiffany Harrison won the 400 meters, coming in at 58.42. Junior Priscilla Appiagyei came in right behind her in second place at 58.64.

The two finished 1-2 out of the 54 runners. Alisha Beeman got her second high jump victory of the year, leaping over a height of 5’2”.

The Hawks 4×400 team cruised to a win in a time of 4:01.34, more than 5 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

“This was a huge meet and our athletes did a fantastic job,” indoor track and field head coach Kathy Manizza said.

The Hawks look to ride their early season momentum as they open up a busy schedule with six meets in seven weeks at the Reebok Indoor Games on Jan. 27.
