The nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards, one of Hollywood’s biggest nights, were announced this week.

If this year’s Golden Globe Awards are any indication of how the Oscars will play out next month then viewers can expect “The Artist” to snag at least a few of the many categories it was nominated for such as Best Picture, Art Design, Cinematography, Directing and Costume Design among others.

This year’s nominees feature a few surprising young actors such as Jonah Hill for Best Supporting Actor in “Moneyball” and Rooney Mara for Best Actress in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Another unusual part of this year’s list of nominees is that two comedies, “Midnight in Paris” and “The Artist,” made the cut for Best Picture, a genre not familiar to the prestigious category. Another standout nod is “Bridesmaids’” nomination for Best Writing (Original Screenplay.)

It is no secret that 2011 was a spectacular year for movies as the Best Picture category flaunts the year’s greatest. The Academy Awards will air live on Sunday Feb. 26 at 7:00p.m. on ABC.
