The Connecticut Whale skated on the ice Friday with the recent acquisition NHL New York Ranger player and found victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-2, at the XL Center.
The former professional, Adam Voros, did not suit up but fans could see that his presence in the locker room provided energy to the players and professional experience to Whale coach Kevin Gardner.
The Whale, at 17 points on the season, were tied for second in the division before the game. With the win’s two points attained they then sat with 19 points at first in the division.
Now in first, the Whale look to have a better chance at the Calder Cup, the championship trophy the amateur hockey league.
Noteworthy players were Sound Tiger golie Kevin Poulin who had 42 saves on 45 shots, Whale defensmen Brandon Bell with the game winning goal and a +2 point scoreand Sound Tiger David Ullstrom with 2 goals.
Even play in OT carried on until a slap shot from Brandon Bell snuck past Sound Tiger goalie Poulin and won the game for the Whale.
Stellar goalie play allowed for the offense to tie the game and force it to OT because of goals from Carl Hagelin and Francois Bouchard, who got his first point of the season.
While playing 5 on 5 the Whale defense demonstrated side attack defensive isolation and kept shots away from the middle for their Whale goalie Chad Johnson.
Difficulty did face the Whale throughout all of the game with Newbury’s 3 penalties, 2 hooking and 1 elbowing calls.
Which accounted for 3 of the team’s 6 penalties and allowed the sound Tiger power play offense to capitalize with 2 Ullstrom goals.
Next for the CT Whale at home are the Binghamton Centers on Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. at the XL Center.
