Students can swap the ugly sweaters for more formal attire this Saturday at Promakkah, Hillel’s annual Chanukah party.
The now five-year-old event is a semi-formal dinner and dance. It features a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, a Kosher, Asian-themed dinner, a cash bar for those who are 21 and older and dancing to music provided by a DJ. Hillel’s student board for the coming year will also be announced during the event.
In years past, Promakkah has been held at off campus locations such as the Bushnell and Avon Old Farms Inn. It was started with a grant given to the organization by the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford.
This year the event will take place at the 1877 Club, a change that hopefully will make the event more accessible to students. “It allows us to drop the ticket price a substantial amount,” said Eric Maurer, who is in charge of Shabbat programming on the Hillel board. “While the old price was not unreasonable, the current $5 a ticket is quite affordable, even for the poor college student,” he added.
Any university student is invited to attend Promakkah. “There is nothing intrinsically Jewish about the event besides it being sponsored by the Jewish club, so of course I invite all students to come out and enjoy the night,” Maurer said.
Tickets are currently being sold for $5 in Hillel’s office in the bottom floor of Park River, however the number is limited to 65. The event will be on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.
