UHa prepares for Hawktober Weekend

A “Hawktoberfest” barbeque at the men’s soccer game against UMBC, concert by University alumnus Javier Colon, ‘00, and a 1940’s, USO themed casino night with food, beverages and prizes are just a few of the activities planned for this year’s Hawktober Weekend taking place Oct. 21 through 23.

Traditionally, Hawktober Weekend combines Homecoming and Parents Weekend for three full days of activities on campus. The weekend kicks off on Friday, Oct. 21 with the 10-year anniversary celebration of the University of Hartford Magnet School. The celebration will include the burying of a time capsule, the unveiling of a new school flag as well as a tour of the school all beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Hawks Officers’ Club and Casino will take place the same evening, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Konover Campus Center. The Hawks USO tour including the Officers’ Club Casino, offers attendees complimentary Hawk Dollars, which they can use to play roulette or poker. Food, beverages and prizes will be available. Tickets are $20 for students, faculty, staff and guests.

Saturday, Oct. 22 will feature events such as the 1st Annual Hog River Arts Festival, the Men’s Lacrosse Alumni Game beginning at 2 p.m. in Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium, Alumni and Parents Happy Hour in Hawk’s Nest, the Men’s Soccer Alumni Game at 4 p.m.

Also that evening, the 7th Annual Anchor Awards Dinner and Ceremony will be taking place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the 1877 Club in the Harry Jack Gray Center. The Anchor Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of alumni of the university and are presented by the Alumni Association. The fee to attend is $35 per person.

Beginning at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Theater will be back-to-back performances by University of Hartford alumnus Javier Colon ’00, who hit it big as the winner of the NBC singing competition, The Voice. Latanya Farrel ’97 will open for Colon.

Tickets are $30 in advance and must be purchased in person at the Lincoln Theater box office.

The weekend comes to a close on Sunday, Oct. 23 after a Jazz Brunch held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Gengras Student Union. The brunch will feature Classes of 2011 and 2001, as well as the University’s Golden Hawks, Classes of ’61 and ’62. The Jazz Brunch costs $15 to attend.

Members of the University community are encouraged to invite their friends and family to take part in any of the number of events that are occurring on campus during Hawktober Weekend.
