Students left in dark, no light in sight

Students living in the Village Apartments, Park River Apartments and Regents Park will be required to stay overnight in the Gengras Student Union again Sunday night.

With the second largest power outage in Connecticut history, and Gov. Malloy declaring a state of emergency, Connecticut Light and Power has given little information as to when power will be restored.

Students are only allowed to return to their apartments to gather belongings. Showers are available for use in the Sports Center. Resident Assistants are suggesting that students stay with friends in freshmen halls. RAs will be doing rounds throughout the afternoon and evening to ensure students are staying out of affected residences.

Why students can’t remain in their residence is because of legal and safety issues. The main concern with apartments without power is the lack of heat and the hazards that come with a non-functional smoke detector system.

As of mid-day Sunday two thirds of Connecticut was without power and West Hartford was 100 percent without power. More than 797 thousand homes are without power according to CL&P.
