Historic Halloween snowstorm scares students, staff

Adam Manison

If you were looking for something scary this Halloween weekend, the forecast of five to eight inches of snow for the Hartford area in the next 24-hours might just provide some unexpected satiation.

Hartford County is under a winter storm warning from 4:00 p.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Sunday.

A surprise to many, a snowstorm is moving through campus with the worst yet to come in the evening hours of Saturday.

The Office of Residential Life is preparing for the worst with an evacuation plan in place for residential halls without back up generators.

Residences that could be affected include the Village Apartments, Regents Park and Park River Apartments. If these areas lose power the Office of Res. Life will execute their emergency plan where students will be required to evacuate to either GSU or the Sports Center.

If evacuated, Resident Assistants will inform students where they will need to go. As of 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, 66,000 Connecticut residents are without power.

According to the National Weather Service the nor’easter could dump up to a foot of snow in some areas of New England.

The storm will deliver high wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph because of the storm’s low pressure.

According to NBC Connecticut there have only been three instances of measurable snow in October in the last 100 years in the state.

Students are encouraged to check the University’s web alert at Hartford.edu as well as the emergency text message system for updates (to sign up go to Hartford.edu/alert).
