At a college like the University of Hartford, we sometimes wonder what our professors are like and what it took to get them here.
One of those exceptional minds, Dr. Warren Goldstein, had an interesting journey along the way.
The chairman of the history department at the university, Professor Goldstein’s story of how he came to teach here speaks of the devotion to his family and the students he teaches.
A member of the University of Hartford faculty for 15 years, Goldstein wanted to shorten his daily commute from Amherst, MA to Long Island, NY so he could spend more time with his family.
According to Goldstein, there weren’t a lot of schools in the New England area to choose from that needed someone to chair the history department but he wasn’t about to give up until he got an interview.
“I wanted to be near my family,” says Goldstein, who enjoys playing doubles tennis with his wife and hunting wild mushrooms.
His love for his family was further emphasized when he made the choice to make weekly flights to Hartford from Florida when his wife, a United Church of Christ minister got a senior position in Coral Gables, an affluent city in Miami.
He could have easily gotten a new teaching job in Florida, but Goldstein loves teaching his students various history classes that range from Intro to History to upper-level courses on the sixties, Vietnam, and sports.
Goldstein’s favorite thing about teaching at the University of Hartford is the small classes, something that isn’t common in larger schools, but according to Goldstein is necessary.
“I like knowing my students,” says Goldstein. “I would hate lecturing 200 students if all they’re going to do is text in class.”
Goldstein can be found in his office in Hillyer 126D or can be emailed at wgoldstei@hartford.edu.-cc
