On Wednesday, Sept. 22, Hartford Hawks’ volleyball team dropped to 5-11 on the season as they lost by a score of 3-1 to the Bryant University Bulldogs (12-5) in the Reich Family Pavilion.

The Hawks trailed 2-0 after losing the first two sets 27-25 and 25-16, respectively, but stormed back to take the third set by a score of 25-20. This third set comeback would have never happened if not for Wednesday night’s ‘queen of the court,’ junior Michelle Cordell.

Cordell was the only Hartford team member to reach double-digits with a whopping 13 kills. Cordell was untouchable, leading Hartford offensively, her attack percentage was .290 committing only four errors in 31 attacks.

The ladies dropped their fourth set 25-22.  “Even though we lost, I thought tonight was one of our best performances,” said Head Coach Don Ferguson. “We did not really have our ‘A’ game but we really came together as a team to get some really tough points.”

In the fourth set Bryant was leading by a score of 24-15 and seemed to have Hartford on the ropes, however, the Hawks managed to get a rally going, bringing the score to 24-22.

Hartford sophomore Kami Nethersole, also a very productive, reliable player for the Hawks, came up with nine kills during Wednesday night’s loss.

Hartford senior Lindsay Ford nabbed a .500 attack percentage, with six kills and only one error in 10 attacks. Lindsay Makowicki and Dionna Kirton contributed eight kills to the match for Hartford.Despite their fighting spirit and hard teamwork, the match was finished off with a kill by Kaitlyn Klein of Bryant University.

“I think the way we fought back says a lot about us as a team,” said Ferguson. “The ladies did not seem to care what the score was, they were just trying to win points.”

“We have another tough match again tomorrow night and we will take all of the positives from tonight into that match,” said Ferguson.

“We plan to focus on the effort that we put in to getting some of the tough points that we won tonight.”
The Hartford Hawks volleyball team will take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers in the Reich Family Pavilion.
