The University of Hartford’s men and women’s golf teams headed back out onto the green this week where they tee’d up and putted to commence their 2010-2011 season.
On Monday, Sept. 20, the Lady Hawks kicked off their season at the Dartmouth Women’s Invitational hosted at the Hanover Country Club.
Over the course of the two-round tournament, the women’s golf team amassed a total of 670 strokes over 36-holes. The University of Hartford women placed No. 13 out of 20 teams in attendance, but the ladies fell only one stroke behind New York University and two-strokes behind Amherst College.
Individually, sophomore Sarah Sideranko putted two incredible rounds of golf; blasting an even par in the first round of play, followed by a 150 round, six-over par. Sideranko’s incredible performance at the Dartmouth Invitational landed her a fifth place overall finish ahead of the 115 golfers that had participated in the tournament. Sideranko finished only two strokes behind the individual leaders for the tournament, Stephanie Hu from Boston College and Kimberly Eaton of Wellesley.
The rest of the women’s team played well during the tournament and finished with respectable individual results. Junior Marissa Kallaugher finished 66th in the tournament, followed by junior Emily Linn who was locked in a tie for 74th place, Kirsten LaPointe ended in 94th place and Hartford’s sole freshman out on the green, Aubrey Ungvarsky clinched a tie for 95th place.
Hartford men’s golf season opened on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the Adams Cup of Newport, Rhode Island.
The Hawks shot a combined 924 over the course of the Adams Cup tournament, landing a 13th place finish for the men’s team which is a marked improvement from their 15th place finish at the tournament last year.
Individually, freshman Pat Ross blazed a fiery path of victory during his first golf-outing at the collegiate level on Tuesday. Ross was the individual leader for the Hartford men’s team, earning an impressive 17th place ranking for the tournament, and finishing only ten strokes behind the tournament champion, Greg Eason of UCF.
Freshman Sean Ko finished respectably, tied for 44th individually at the Adams Cup, junior Matt Smith tied for 52nd overall while D.J. Lantz finished 70th, and Michael DiMeglio finished up the weekend for the Hawks, he tied at 74th overall.
The men’s golf team will host their own Hartford Hawk Invitational next Monday, Sept. 27 and Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Bull’s Bridge Golf Course in South Kent, CT. The men’s golf invitational will be the first that they have hosted since Sept. 2008.
The next outing for women’s golf will be on Sept. 25 and 26 at the Yale Fall Invitational hosted at the Yale Golf Course in New Haven.
