Do people actually take the judicial system seriously? It was put into place to protect people’s rights, uphold the laws of the country and solve disputes. In recent years, people have not been treating it with the respect that it deserves when they take groups or companies to court over stupid things. On Tuesday, it was announced that Lindsay Lohan filed a lawsuit because E-Trade used her name in a commercial.
This is ridiculous and has taken lawsuits to an even worse level. You are seriously suing a company for using your name. You don’t own that name. Many other people have had the name before you and many people continue to have that name.
The commercial they are referring to is one of the baby commercials, which I personally find hilarious. This one aired during the Super Bowl and it features the original male baby talking to a “girlfriend” over the computer and she asks if “that milkaholic Lindsay wasn’t over?” and the baby girl Lindsay peaks her head into the screen and says, “milka….what?”
The baby girl who plays Lindsay is blonde with short hair. When I watch that commercial I always laugh. It’s funny and it makes me watch it all the way through every time, which to me is a sign of an effective commercial. Lindsay Lohan was not even a thought in my mind while viewing this commercial. The company also says it wasn’t their intention to use “her name as a parody to her life,” which is what her lawyer said to the New York Post.
I think it is really arrogant of Lohan to assume that the commercial was a parody about her when really it doesn’t seem like it was all. Lohan is suing for $100 million.
That is an absurd amount of money for the use of her name. It is also an inappropriate use of the justice system. If everyone sued over the use of their name, and let’s not say everyone, let’s say every celebrity sued over the use of their name in a manner that might be associated to them, then the courts would be tied up for years.
There have been many dumb lawsuits in the past few years over small disagreements or interactions that don’t even merit being heard in court. It is a waste of time for the judge, the jury and the lawyers to hear some of these cases.
This case just brings to light how people need to stop suing over every little thing that happens.
No one before this lawsuit associated the commercial with Lohan, but I bet now there are going to be more people viewing of the commercial and are now going to be looking for similarities.
This much publicity will also open the doors for other pointless lawsuits that could potentially hinder the overall running of the justice system. Murder trials, domestic disputes and actual crimes are much more important to be processed rather than using my name wrong.
They used my first name in a way I don’t like, even though there are at least 60,000 females in the United States with the same name.
The current use of the justice system is not as it should be, there should be some kind of way to weed out the preposterous cases.
