Squatting Process Has Been Changed: New Info for Students

Anchoring, formerly known as squatting, will be a rolling process that takes place out of the Office of Residential Life for this year’s housing selection.

Students who wish to remain in their current housing assignment for the next academic year still need to fill out and submit an anchoring form.

However, unlike in years prior, students no longer need to show up on a specific day to submit this information.
Previously, students came to a room announced by the Office of Residential Life, usually in Gengras Student Union.
There, students could submit their forms to anchor in their housing assignment.

Students could only complete this process on that day, which was previously scheduled this year for April 7. However, the Office of Residential Life’s assignment team cancelled the day early in March.

They have opted instead to have anchoring be a rolling process with a final deadline of Wednesday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
Students who wish to anchor can print out the anchoring form from the Office of Residential Life’s Web site and submit it to the ORL office on or before that date. From there the assignments team will take the information, verify it and place the students.

Students will receive an e-mail notification by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 2 if the anchoring application was accepted.
This allots time for students to make alternate plans for housing in time for Room Selection on Saturday, April 10 if they are not allowed to anchor in their space.

The general rules for anchoring still apply, however. In order to anchor a space, students must have at least 50 percent of the current residents of the apartment in Regents Park, Park River and the Village will be returning to the space.

Only single rooms in E and F Complex can be anchored. First-year living areas, A through D Complex and Hawk Hall, cannot be anchored.

All students anchoring must have paid the $250 housing deposit and be status 1 students.
If students have any questions, they should direct them to their Resident Assistant or area’s Resident Director.

More information on room selection will appear in the April 1 edition of the Informer. Students with concerns can go to the Office of Residential Life, located behind F Complex. There is also a room selection booklet available online through the Residential Life Web site, Anchoring, formerly known as squatting, will be a rolling process that takes place out of the Office of Residential Life for this year’s housing selection.
