The ‘50s aren’t so far gone with the release of “Volume Two,” the latest work coming from the indie-folk duo She & Him. Appropriately titled, the album seems to be an extension of the preceding “Volume One” by bringing back often forgotten songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s.
Though the stylistic choices of the pair’s renditions don’t seem to have evolved much since their debut, the modern folk spin put on classic love songs continue to impress music fanatics across the country. When the loveable actress Zooey Deschanel met indie music prodigy M. Ward on the set of “The Go-Getter” their charisma was immediately discovered while singing a duet for the film. Though Deschanel had never professionally tried her hand in music, she had years worth of home recordings, and when she sent them to Ward on a whim, the collaboration began.
Throughout “Volume Two,” Deschanel doesn’t stray far from the unique voice she is known for. Her wispy verses bring an airy feel to songs that were originally created as pop, and accompanied by Ward’s calm, soothing harmonies, the covers of once popular songs become totally transformed.
Featured on the album are past top-of-the-charts hits such as NRBQ’s “Ridin’ in my Car,” and Skeeter Davis’ “Gonna Get Along Without You Now.” Replacing what was once electric guitar with pure acoustics and snares, the album thrives on its buoyant and leisurely feel.
Throw these 13 simple tracks on and instantaneously it will brighten the mood in any crowd of downers.
Deschanel’s finesse as a songwriter shines through as well in original tracks that are also featured on the album. “In the Sun,” is a piano-backed melody highlighting the easiness of Deschanel’s voice, seemingly radiating warmth, staying true to its title.
Through tracks such as this one, Deschanel and Ward have perfected the California-folk sub genre, leaving a trail of the tranquil and blithe sounds of the Pacific all the way to the East.
So if you can’t get enough She and Him, look out for their upcoming sure-to-be dazzling performances this summer. The band has signed on to the line-up for several music festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo and Sasquatch. The rest of their time is scheduled to be spent delighting Europeans with their mellow melodies, so be sure not to miss it.
