Andy’s Indie Artist Spotlight: Matt Costa On Fast Track to Success

Huntington Beach, California, native and former pro skateboarder, Matt Costa, has rapidly been gaining popularity not only as an independent musician but also as a dominant force in song writing. With the release of his brand new single “Permanent Vacation,” which is available for free download through his Web site, Matt Costa is quickly becoming recognized for his music through promotion and cameos in major motion pictures.

With the unforeseen career ending leg break of his youth, Costa switched gears and turned away from skateboarding and focused all his energy on song writing. Finding an in with No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, Costa was taken under the wing of a successful musician.

On his Web site Costa explained “One of the first things he told me was ‘stop practicing so hard and let the feeling come out.’

It stuck with me because that’s the key to music. The light went on in my head,” Costa remarked on Dumont’s influence.
Hitting the pavement running with a U.S. tour in a small but trusty van, Matt Costa spread his music to new audiences the old fashioned way, one show at a time.

Eventually gaining the support of, and sharing a label with, Jack Johnson, Costa found himself in a very good position and able to release his material on Brushfire Records.

Achieving mild success and making an impact with his 2007 Brushfire Release of “Unfamiliar Faces” Matt Costa showed the world his potential and molded the album beautifully touching base on his pop song capabilities with “Mr. Pitiful” but also taking a step back and reflecting with “Trying to Lose My Mind.”

Costa put his intentions and purpose for the album in an interview on his Web site: “I’m always feeling like I’m suspicious of what people are really thinking. Everyone has another side that you may not know: their unfamiliar face.”

One of my favorite new artists, Matt Costa is well on his way to bigger things. Starting out making a name for himself with music appearing in films such as “I Love You, Man” and “Youth in Revolt” I see Costa on the fast track to success as an indie artist and possibly a big mainstream media name.
