Best Picture Goes To: “District 9”

In the recent expansion of the best movie category at the Oscars, “District 9” was one of the movies that slipped in unwarranted.

This is not to say that “District 9” was a bad movie. In truth, it was perhaps the most underrated movie of the year. The advertising never really represented the movie. What was portrayed in the trailers was an action movie—an alien crushing, protect the human race, fast paced adventure.

What set this movie apart was that it didn’t fall into these old stereotypes. The movie was a documentary of sorts, a fairly unprecedented style in Oscar nominations. But what we found was that we were more on the side of the aliens than the humans. The directors have made us feel for the graphically generated aliens that they have created.

The story itself was well crafted, A mix of action and drama. The acting was above the standards of its contemporaries in the action genre. However, this does not mean it is worth an academy award. Nor does it deserve even a nomination. Out of the 10 selected, this is perhaps the least deserving.

I did enjoy this movie, and would definitely watch it again. But a win from this movie would simply indicate the dilution of the Academy Award brand.

I’m sorry, but “District 9″ is the best film of the year. The average filmgoer and disillusioned critics may not see its utter brilliance and ingenuity because of a half-a-billion 3d movie, and of a war film female director. But years will pass, and “District 9″ will be venerated as one of the best films in history.

The food for thought: are there any comparisons with the Half-Life epic PC games?
